MP says deal’s success is in everyone’s interests

This afternoon in the House of Commons, the Government answered an Urgent Question from the Shadow Foreign Secretary over President Trump’s decision to de-certify the Iranian Nuclear Deal.

In the House of Commons, John asked,

“In welcoming the Government’s position, does the Minister accept that what is important is the direction of travel of the régime, and that the moderates in Iran have the upper hand courtesy of the large part because of this deal?”

“Will the Government therefore do all it can to encourage Congress not to make the wrong decision during this 60-day window? Otherwise, the implications for the rules-based international system are obvious, not least for the North Koreans.”

The Minister, Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP, agreed with the assessment, and assured the House that all was being done to encourage President Trump to think again. He also accepted that there were implications when it came to agreements generally, particularly with régimes that might not agree exactly with aspects of any agreement.

John said afterwards,

“Relations with Iran stand at a pivotal point during a chequered history in which both the international community and Iran have made mistakes. Whilst some concerns about Iran are understandable, it is in everyone’s interests that this deal is honoured by both sides, not least as we need to make progress generally on other issues.”
