MP explains why he is supporting this deal
After Saturday’s aborted attempt to pass the Prime Minister’s deal, courtesy of remain opposition within Parliament, in the House of Commons today, MPs are debating the Second Reading of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, which implements the Brexit deal struck by the Prime Minister last week.
In the Chamber, John said,
“For those of us who opposed Theresa May’s deal, this new deal has been worth waiting for, and I will therefore be supporting it. The Prime Minister has confounded his critics by opening up the Withdrawal Agreement and removing the previous backstop – something we were told previously could never be done.”
“The Transition Period to December 2020 is not perfect, and compromises have had to be made by both sides. But the downsides are manageable. For me, the elephant in the room was always the previous backstop: it alone could have allowed the EU to indefinitely suspend the UK in a structure of its own making; it alone could have denied us the referendum result and our exiting from the EU; it alone would have made a bad trade deal or no deal more likely.”
“That has now changed. Because the previous backstop has been removed, there is an incentive for both parties to negotiate a good trade deal. Removing the backstop actually makes a trade deal more likely, helped by the fact that both sides start from a common position and with common interests.”
“Three and a half years after voting to leave, the time has now come to honour the referendum result. Passing this deal will be the start of this process.”
