MP: British Council’s links will be even more important after crisis

Today in the House of Commons, John Baron MP raised the situation of the British Council, the UK organisation that promotes the English language and British culture abroad. Given the worldwide coronavirus emergency has closed down its commercial operations, it is in a difficult financial position.

In the House of Commons, John asked,
“I commend the Prime Minister and all those on the front line for their handling of this emergency, and he will know I have raised with him previously the importance of reaching out to those elderly and vulnerable who live alone, regardless of their health, so that no-one is left behind and feels isolated.”

“However, as a former Foreign Secretary may I raise with him the plight of the British Council? Given that it has had to cease its commercial activities, and its reserves will be exhausted within weeks, can he ensure funding will be made available to see it over this difficult period?”

The Prime Minister responded that he fully appreciates the work of the British Council and that funding will be made available.

John said afterwards,

“It is extremely good news that the Prime Minister will look into providing emergency funding to the British Council, which will keep it going during these difficult times. It does a fantastic job in promoting our language and culture abroad and in forging links which will be even more important when we all get through the present crisis.”
