MP says everyone should help protect the NHS and save lives

The Government has announced generous support for businesses, including for the self-employed. Employers who have closed their businesses can apply for loans and guarantees, and can benefit from business rates holidays, cash grants and a furlough scheme which will cover 80% of the wages of staff (up to £2,500/month) who remain on the payroll. 95% of self-employed people can benefit from a taxable grant worth 80% of average monthly profits (also up to £2,500/month), and income tax self-assessment payments will be deferred from July to the end of January 2021. John said,

“At this time of national emergency, the Government has rightly unveiled a generous package of reforms to support businesses, including the self-employed, and to protect jobs so that we can all get back on our feet quickly when things return to normal.”

“In particular, I urge employers to read through the job retention scheme details [please see ‘notes to editors’ below] before laying off any workers – many are apparently unaware, for example, that they are not obliged to pay the 20% remaining of their workers’ wages, though I hope all firms which are able will consider this.”

“Meanwhile, everyone should remain at home, except when on essential business, to protect the NHS and save lives. I encourage employers and employees alike to work together and approach the current situation with common sense as to whether work is truly essential if it can not be done from home.”
