Amendment will help improve cancer survival rates

John Baron MP has tabled New Clause 19 to the Health & Care Bill, which returns to the Commons on Monday. The amendment will help to improve cancer survival rates by encouraging the NHS to diagnose cancer earlier, which greatly increases the chances of successful treatment. John was Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer for nine years.

John said,

“The main reason our cancer survival rates lag behind comparable health services abroad is because the NHS is less good at detecting cancers in their early stages. If the NHS were to match the best survival rates in Europe, it is estimated that 10,000 lives could be saved each year.”

“My New Clause 19, which has been endorsed by the founding Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK as well as by nearly 70 MPs from across the Commons, will better encourage the NHS to focus on earlier diagnosis by putting outcome measures (such as one-year survival rates) above process targets (such as waiting times).”

“This should encourage the NHS to bear down on survival rates, which are what really matter to patients and their families.”
