MP concerned by overstretched public services
Today in the House of Commons, during Home Office questions, John Baron MP asked the Home Secretary, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, about immigration. In December 2013, the transitional controls on immigration from Bulgaria and Rumania will lapse, permitting migrants from those countries to settle and work in Britain.
In the House of Commons, John asked,
“Given public services are already overstretched, there are concerns that we will see a fresh round of immigration from Rumania and Bulgaria as transitional agreements lapse in December 2013. What lessons have the Government learnt from our experience in 2004?”
The Home Secretary replied that lessons had been learnt from the previous round of EU expansion, and that the Government would do what it could to limit the impact of the December change.
Afterwards, John said,
“The previous Government got it very wrong in 2004, and wildly miscalculated the subsequent level of EU migration. What is required now is a more sensitive approach which takes into account the burden on essential public services, such as the NHS and schools.”
