MP urges Government to drop April NI increases

Given recent borrowing figures have shown that the public finances are in a better state than anticipated some months ago, John Baron MP is re-iterating his calls for the forthcoming increase in National Insurance to be abandoned. In September John voted against the Health & Social Care Levy Bill which set up this increase.

John said,

“As Conservatives normally understand, a rise in National Insurance is a tax on jobs, and there is also an unfairness in that low-paid workers will pay a higher proportion of their income in NI contributions. I had no qualms in voting against the NI increase last September.”

“This increase in National Insurance is also taking place at a time when the costs of living are also heaping pressure on many families. Growing inflation, petrol prices and energy bills are causing concerns for many people, and a rise in NI will only make things worse. It really is the wrong tax at the wrong time, and I urge the Government to take advantage of the favourable borrowing figures and abandon it.”
