MP argues against increase in fuel duty

Today John Baron MP, along with 100 other MPs, sponsored a debate in the House of Commons calling for a halt in the rise of fuel duty. According to present Government plans, fuel duty will increase by 3p a litre in January, with further increases planned for later in the year. Existing fuel prices are already high, and this proposed rise will come as a heavy blow to small businesses which are vital to our economy, and to hard-pressed families – some of whom are already spending 10% of their income on filling up their cars.

Having attended the Debate, John said:

“High fuel prices are causing significant difficulties to people and businesses not only in Basildon and Billericay, but across the country. The proposals to raise fuel duty in the New Year will only make matters worse, and should be scrapped by the Government.”

“The Government should also be pressing the oil companies to ensure far greater transparency in pricing. All too often, petrol pump prices mirror oil prices up, but are slow to fall when oil prices fall. This is very wrong.”
