MP says our record in the region has not been good
Yesterday in the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon William Hague MP, delivered a statement and answered questions on the situation in Syria. The Foreign Secretary reiterated that the UK was only supplying non-lethal assistance to the rebels and local human rights organisations.
During the statement, John asked,
“The West’s track record on protecting minorities in interventions of this sort has not always been good. What work is being done to ensure that the minorities in Syria, including the Christians and the Alawites, will be afforded the same protection as they have received under Assad should he fall?”
The Foreign Secretary complimented John on his question, and assured MPs that the Government takes the issue of minorities very seriously.
Afterwards, John said,
“Our misguided invasion of Iraq had the terrible unintended consequence of violence against religious minorities which had been present for thousands of years. Should the Syrian Government fall, it is imperative that the welfare of minorities is preserved.”
