Prime Minister says yes to a meeting

Today in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister made a statement on his negotiations in Brussels regarding the EU budget over the next seven years. John Baron MP used the opportunity to highlight the need for an EU referendum concerning membership. This follows a letter sent by John and co-signed by 100 Conservative back-benchers urging the Prime Minister to legislate in this Parliament for a referendum in the next.

John asked,

“Our letter in June, co-signed by 100 Conservative back-benchers, called for the Prime Minister to legislate in this Parliament for a referendum in the next regarding our membership of the EU. The Prime Minister declined, but said he would like to continue discussions. In congratulating him on standing up for British interests, will he now meet us to discuss this matter, following our further letter of last week?”

The Prime Minister responded that he was always happy to meet and discuss the issue with John.

John said afterwards,

“My colleagues and I now look forward to the meeting. Legislating now for a referendum would address public mistrust when it comes to political promises on the EU. Holding the referendum in the next Parliament would allow time for the PM to repatriate powers and also for the Eurozone crisis to play out.”
