MP says rarer cancers must not be overlooked

Today, during Health Questions in the House of Commons, John Baron MP questioned the Minister with responsibility for cancer, George Freeman MP, about rarer cancers.

John asked,

“In part because they are the ‘hidden majority’, people with rarer cancers are often diagnosed late, and often through an emergency presentation. This can lead to more aggressive treatments which have a longer term impact on health. Will the Minister provide an update on plans to roll out tailored recovery packages as set out in the Government’s announcement in September last year?”

The Minister responded that the Government has spent £1 billion on the cancer drugs fund, and that outcomes are improving for cancer patients.

John said afterwards,

“Rarer cancers account for over half of all cancers, yet are often overlooked. This must change, especially if the Government is serious about increasing our survival rates to match the best in Europe – at the moment, we lag well behind.”

“The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer will continue to raise rarer cancers with the Government, both inside and outside Parliament.”
