11 – Every 11 days last year, 8,137 people came to Britain from the EU

As we approach the final furlong to the EU referendum, and with the necessary apologies to the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’, John Baron MP is sharing his ‘Twelve Days of the European Union’, setting out why we should vote to leave on 23rd June. Further daily instalments to follow.

Last month, the ONS published the most current figures for immigration into the UK. This revealed that 270,000 EU citizens came to Britain last year, or 8,137 every 11 days. This underlines the high levels of immigration from the EU to the UK, which the Government can not control due to the EU’s ‘freedom of movement’ rules. Levels of immigration could rise further if Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey join the EU.

John said,

“Unlimited EU immigration puts great strains on our already overstretched public services. Voting to leave the EU will allow the Government to properly control the numbers entering the UK, will lead to wage rises as acknowledged by the Chairman of ‘Britain Stronger in Europe’, and will permit the Government to design a fairer immigration system open to the whole world, not just the EU.”
