MP: Government must retain strong negotiating hand

This afternoon in the House of Commons, John Baron MP questioned the Prime Minister during her Statement on leaving the EU.

In the Chamber, John asked,

“The Prime Minister is right to keep her nerve – the EU could write the textbook on eleventh-hour deals. Most colleagues would prefer a good deal to no deal, but can she reassure the House that, should we leave the EU on 29th March on no deal terms, we are sufficiently prepared?”

The Prime Minister responded that the Government was prepared for no deal, and was ramping up its work in this area alongside the devolved administrations and local authorities.

Afterwards, John said,

“Though most, including myself, would prefer to leave with a good deal, it is essential we are properly prepared for all eventualities – not least because unless leaving with no deal is credible, it will not aid the Government’s negotiating hand in the Brexit negotiations.”
