MP: We should honour 29th March exit date
Yesterday in the House of Commons, MPs voted on a range of Brexit amendments as well as on proposals to extend Article 50. A vote calling for a second referendum was defeated 334 votes to 85, and several attempts by remain MPs to wrest control of Commons business from the Government were also defeated. However, the House of Commons voted to request an extension of the Article 50 period by 413 votes to 202. John Baron MP voted against all the amendments, and against the main motion on extension.
John said,
“I am pleased the House of Commons rejected all amendments yesterday. This included trouncing the notion of a second referendum, which should put this idea to bed once and for all. It also continues to reject attempts by MPs to hijack control of the Commons business, which would not be a good development.”
“Nevertheless, I am disappointed the House of Commons voted to request an extension of the Article 50 period. I voted against this because we should honour our exit date of 29th March – people and businesses expect this to be the case, and the Government has announced we are prepared for a no deal exit if necessary.”
