MP again urges Prime Minster to embrace a no deal / WTO exit
Yesterday, following the passage of the EU Withdrawal Act sponsored by Rt Hon Sir Oliver Letwin MP and Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP on Monday, there was a vote on whether the Government should be mandated by Parliament to seek a further delay on the UK’s exit date from the EU to 30th June 2019. The vote was won by 420 votes to 110. John Baron MP voted against the change, and he also previously opposed delaying the UK’s exit date of 29th March.
John said,
“This is the latest example of how the remain-dominated Parliament is setting itself against the electorate’s vote to leave the EU. The clear implication of MPs’ votes to trigger Article 50 in February 2017 – by a majority of 384 – was that the UK would be leaving the EU at the end of March, with or without a deal. These delays are unnecessary and unacceptable.”
“I would like to leave the EU with a good deal, but the Withdrawal Agreement is not a good deal because the potentially indefinite backstop would keep us closely bound in. In the absence of a good deal, we must leave the EU on no deal / WTO terms – for which the Government and Prime Minister have repeatedly informed Parliament the UK is fully prepared, having spent £4.2 billion to this end. I urge the Prime Minister to embrace a no deal / WTO exit so that we can leave the EU on Friday.”
