MP: UK is a soft power superpower

Yesterday during Defence Questions in the House of Commons, John Baron MP asked the Secretary of State for Defence, Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, about defence diplomacy.

John asked,

“The British Council APPG, of which I am Chairman, has been overseeing an enquiry into aspects of the UK’s soft power capabilities. How does defence diplomacy fit into the Government’s overall soft power strategy?”

The Secretary of State responded that Defence engagement is used to promote British values, that with some governments the closest relations are between our militaries, and Defence has its own contribution to make to our soft power.

Afterwards, John said,

“Britain remains a soft power superpower, leading international surveys even when compared to countries such as France, Germany and the United States. However other countries, including Russia and China, are greatly increasing their spending in this important area, and we can not afford to rest on our laurels.”

“One of the early findings of our enquiry is that there needs to be a more joined-up and coordinated approach across Government as regards our soft power effort, to ensure maximum return from our investment in this important aspect of our international engagement. I am pleased the Secretary of State recognises this, and will keep pressing other Departments to follow suit.”
