MP says deal must respect national interests
Today in the House of Commons, the Paymaster General, Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, gave a Statement following the meeting between the Prime Minister and EU Commission President last night.
In the Chamber, John asked,
“I welcome that the negotiations are ongoing, and we all want a good deal – but if the EU doesn’t accept British sovereignty, which was at the heart of the 2016 vote, then the Prime Minister has the party’s full support in the event of no deal. After all, both the EU and the UK already trade profitably with much of the world on no deal terms, including with the United States, China, India and Australia.”
The Paymaster General said John was right and thanked him for his support, which will help the Prime Minister and the British negotiating team in the coming days.
John said afterwards,
“There is a great appetite for a good deal, and I wish our negotiating team every success as they fight Britain’s corner over the next few days. However, if a deal which respects our supreme national interests is not possible, then the Prime Minister has wide support to take us out of the transition period without a deal.”
