MP: It is right the Commission apologises for historic inequality
Following the publication of the Special Committee Report on Historical Inequalities, in the House of Commons today the Secretary of State for Defence will apologise for the unequal treatment of predominately black and Asian soldiers who died fighting for the British in the First World War but who did not receive the same recognition as their white brothers-in-arms because of ‘pervasive racism’ at the time.
John said,
“As an ex-soldier, I strongly believe that all soldiers should be commemorated equally, as is the case now. Unfortunately it was not the case 100 years ago, and it is right that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Government acknowledges this historic inequality and apologises for it.”
“I also look forward to hearing from the Secretary of State what steps will now be taken to address this unfortunate situation and ensure the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of troops in our nation’s service is now properly marked and commemorated.”
