MP says Britain sends strong signal

In Britain’s first autonomous application of sanctions, the Government has published its Global Human Rights sanctions regime, under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018. This will allow the Government to impose asset freezes and travel bans upon individuals in response to activity which would amount to serious human rights violations. The first designations are for those involved in the mistreatment and death of Sergei Magnitsky, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the violence against the Rohingya population in Myanmar and the forced labour, torture and murder in North Korea’s prison camps.

John said,

“I welcome the establishment of the Global Human Rights sanctions regime. For too long those who have broken internationally-recognised human rights norms have been free to travel to Britain and stash their ill-gotten gains in our banks and institutions. This changes now, and should send a strong signal to the world that Britain is standing up for human rights and that actions have consequences.”
