MP: Act is sensible and proportionate legislation

The Coronavirus Act 2020 has a ‘sunset clause’ which means it will expire two years after coming into force, and during this period MPs vote at six-month intervals as to whether the emergency powers should continue. The first of these votes is today, and John Baron MP will be supporting the Government.

John said,

“Parliament has been holding the Government to account throughout the pandemic, with innovative procedures to allow MPs and Peers to participate remotely if necessary. This work continues, and my Parliamentary colleagues and I regularly use all Parliamentary gambits open to us to seek answers for constituents and to question Government policy.”

“Overall I continue to believe that the Government is doing well to respond to a situation unprecedented in modern times, and it is good news that the Government has recognised that it should involve Parliamentarians more in this process. As such, I will vote for the continuance of the time-limited powers in the Coronavirus Act, which is mostly a sensible and proportionate set of measures to enable the Government to address the coronavirus pandemic.”
