MP raises issue in House of Commons
John Baron MP is pressing the Government over the need to oblige energy companies to print on all domestic bills whether their customers are on the company’s cheapest tariff , and if not how they should go about switching. During the course of his campaign in the last Parliament, John was able to push the then Government to oblige suppliers to include this information on the new annual statements, but they refused to make this a requirement on all energy bills. Such a requirement was promised in the Conservative election Manifesto but was not included in the Coalition Agreement. John has written to the Secretary of State and raised the matter during the Debate on the Address in the House of Commons.
John said:
“Given the confusion caused by the existence of around 4,000 different tariffs resulting in nearly a half of all those who switch ending up on a more expensive tariff, clarity is desperately needed which the energy companies are all too able to provide. It is important therefore that the Coalition Government addresses this point.”
“I have been assured that the Department of Energy and Climate Change will examine the best way in which this Manifesto promise can be delivered, and I will be monitoring progress closely.”
“Latest figures suggest something like 4 million people live in fuel poverty. Reducing domestic energy bills by ensuring households are on the cheapest available tariff will go a long way to reduce this figure.”
