102 Conservative MPs write to the Daily Telegraph

Today 102 Conservative MPs, including John Baron MP, signed a letter sent to the Daily Telegraph pressing the Government to claw back 130 criminal laws from the European Union.

Owing to a provision in the Lisbon Treaty, the Government has the ability to repatriate a raft of EU police and justice laws which were adopted before the Treaty came into force. Under this arrangement, the Government has until 2014 to repatriate these powers, after which the window will close and full jurisdiction for them will be irreversibly transferred to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. However, if the powers are repatriated, Parliament has the option of choosing which powers to ‘opt into’.

John Baron said,

“The European Union exercises far too much power over our affairs. This repatriation would be a welcome step in the right direction, allowing us to take back control over many areas of crime and policing.”

“I hope our well-argued letter will make the Government sit up and think.”
