MP talks of unforeseen consequences of military intervention
Today in the House of Commons, during a Statement by the Foreign Secretary on Syria, John Baron MP pressed the Government as to the reasons for China and Russia vetoing the UN Resolution on Syria. John linked it to Western powers extending their UN remit in Libya.
John said:
“Does the Foreign Secretary accept that the regrettable decision to veto was, at least in part, because Russia and China believed Western powers exceeded their mandate under UN Resolution 1973 when pursuing regime change in Libya – as they themselves said at the time?”
The Foreign Secretary denied this could be any justification for vetoing the Resolution on Syria.
John said afterwards:
“The evidence would suggest that there is a causal link between Russia and China’s concern about our Libya intervention and the Syrian vote. Military interventions often have unforeseen consequences and this may be one of them.”
