MP highlights importance of self determination and international support

During Defence Questions yesterday in the House of Commons, John Baron MP asked the Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond MP, about the defence of the Falkland Islands. There is growing diplomatic and commercial pressure in South America, spearheaded by President de Kirchner, for the islands to be handed over to Argentina.

 John asked,

“Having served with the present Commander of the British Forces in the Falklands, the Argentines would be very foolish even to contemplate any sort of military intervention. But does the Secretary of State agree that a strong statement of support from the United States would be helpful?”

The Secretary of State replied that although statements of support from all allies are helpful, the UK is ready and able to defend the Islands alone if necessary.

 Afterwards, John said,

“There can be no question of the transfer of sovereignty to Argentina against the wishes of the Islanders. It would be helpful if the US expressed support for the principle of self determination. Meanwhile, the Government must continue to ensure the same level of protection from foreign aggression – economic or military – as all other British citizens.”
