MP highlights need to reduce the number of vulnerable people joining gangs

Today in the House of Commons, during Home Office Questions, John Baron pressed the Government over the need to combat the rise in gang-related crime.

John said,

“Gang-related crime is a plague on many of our communities. Government measures so far are welcome, but what more can the Government do to combat this problem, particularly when it comes to reducing the number of vulnerable people who are drawn to these gangs?”

The Minister of State, Damian Green MP, agreed that the issue of vulnerable people was important. The Government will be making support available to the parents and families of gang-members, as well as appointing a dedicated Police team to address gang violence and the issue of vulnerability.

John said afterwards,

“We must come down hard on these gangs, and be prepared to commit the resources to do it. This should be part of a tougher law-and-order policy, which must include tougher sentencing. But we also have to address the issue of why so many young people are drawn to these gangs. We can then take steps to break the link.”
