MP refers Minister to international law

Today in Defence Questions in the House of Commons, John Baron MP pressed the Defence Secretary, the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, over whether an attack on Iran would breach international law.

John said,

“In the absence of the appropriate Security Council authorisation, or the justification of self-defence, does the Secretary of State agree that any attack on Iran – whether by Israel or not – would be an act of aggression in breach of international law?”

The Secretary of State said in response that it would depend on the circumstances, but for the UK it would be a breach of international law.

John said afterwards,

“The use of force is tightly controlled by international law. Therefore, it does not depend on the circumstances, but rather whether international law has been breached. In the absence of self-defence, or of UN authorisation, there can be no justification for an attack on another country.”
