MP encourages local SMEs to participate in Government consultation

Today, during an urgent question in the House of Commons, John Baron MP called upon the Government to implement the findings of the Beecroft report. The report lays out proposed changes to reduce regulation and red tape surrounding employment.

Research has shown that regulation, and employment regulation in particular, is the issue small businesses complain about most. As many as half say it often puts them off taking on new permanently-employed staff.

John is also calling on local small businesses to participate in a Government consultation on making it more straightforward for very small businesses to dismiss underperforming staff.

In the House of Commons, John said,

“A key reason the Eurozone crisis is unfolding is because politicians are failing to introduce the sweeping supply-side reforms needed to generate growth to help close the gap between what governments pay out, and what they bring in. I therefore encourage the Government to ignore the benches opposite and take a knife to employment regulation which, according to SMEs, is the main reason staff are not taken on.”

The Minister agreed.

Afterwards, John said,

“Small and medium businesses are the backbone of our economy. The vast majority of the workforce in the private sector are employed by SMEs. The more Government can do to reduce the regulatory burden on these firms, the greater the chances of generating economic growth.”

“As well as drawing up the report, the Government has opened a consultation on these issues. If you are a small business owner, I encourage you to inform the Government of your experiences.”
