MP points to belt tightening across Europe

Today in the House of Commons during Treasury Questions, John Baron MP questioned the Chancellor as to the UK’s budget contributions to the EU. John has long advocated cuts to the budget, but thinks it is particularly appropriate now given the Eurozone crisis. He has voted against his own Government in calling for such budget cuts.

John said:

“With belt tightening very much on the agenda across Europe, will the Chancellor at least consider making deep cuts to our EU budget contributions and so align himself with the vast majority of people in this country.”

The Chancellor gave a non-committal answer, but rightly highlighted that this Government is taking a tougher line than the previous Government.

John said afterwards:

“Key negotiations are about to take place about the EU budget. In defiance of the austerity around them, the EU is demanding an increase. This is clearly wrong, yet once again proves how detached it is from peoples’ wishes.”
