MP questions Minister over ‘Big Six’

During recent Energy Questions in the House of Commons, John Baron MP questioned Rt Hon Ed Davey MP over reforms to energy bills proposed by the Billing Stakeholder Group (BSG), chaired by John. The recommendation of the BSG was that customers should receive on the face of quarterly bills a tailored message in monetary terms as to how much they could save by switching to their supplier’s cheapest standard direct debit tariff. Energy Bills are too complex, not helped by hundreds of different tariffs.

In the House of Commons, John said,

“Given the Government has accepted the BSG’s recommendation, and that Ofgem understandably can not assure us that this change will be included in its current review or be implemented by Christmas, could I ask the Secretary of State to get the Prime Minister to push the ‘Big Six’ energy companies?”

The Secretary of State, Rt Hon Ed Davey MP, paid tribute to John’s work on this issue, but did not undertake to speak to the Prime Minister.

Afterwards, John said,

“This reform to energy bills would make a real difference to customers, pointing them in the right direction towards cheaper energy. Most of the big energy companies cause confusion by having far too many tariffs. I will continue to push the Government and Ofgem to ensure our proposal is implemented quickly.”
