MP highlights Government’s willingness to opt-in to EU measures

Today in the House of Commons, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, the Home Secretary, made a statement to the House regarding the Government’s decision to opt-out of a block of EU police and crime measures. John took the opportunity to press the Home Secretary as to future Government policy.

John asked,

“I welcome this opt-out. However, given that any opt-in in the future would give the European Court of Justice UK jurisdiction for the very first time, would it not be better to rule out any opt-ins in the future?”

The Home Secretary said in reply that the Government would continue to assess all such questions on a case-by-case basis in the national interest.

John said afterwards,

“Let us be clear this decision does not represent a repatriation of powers, as we are opting-out of a new set of EU powers – not an existing set. The Coalition Government has to date opted into roughly 17 out of the 32 possible opt-in measures. This hardly sounds like a repatriation of powers.”
