MP says a strike by Israel would be illegal

Today in the House of Commons, John Baron MP asked a question during a statement by the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon William Hague MP, on the situation in the Middle East between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and the fighting continues in Syria. Meanwhile, tension continues to mount between Iran and the West over the latter’s suspicions the former is attempting to assemble a nuclear bomb.

In the House of Commons, John said,

“Does the Foreign Secretary agree that Israel’s legitimate right to self-defence does not extend to a pre-emptive strike on Iran?”

The Foreign Secretary replied that Britain was continuing to advise Israel against a strike.

Afterwards, John said,

“The UN Charter makes it clear all countries have the right of legitimate self-defence. However, this does not extend to a pre-emptive strike against another country, which would be illegal under international law. The Government needs make this clear to the Israeli leadership.”
