MP: Fun Walk helps to sponsor Auschwitz visit

Today John Baron MP addressed 6th Form students at the Billericay School, Laindon Road, Billericay.  Most of the session was in the form of questions and answers. John also met with Mrs Sue Hammond [Headteacher]  and Lucy Franks – one of two students from the school that will be attending the annual Auschwitz visit as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project. John’s Fun walk subsidises the visit for all local participating secondary schools each year.  He has written to all schools in the constituency offering the subsidy from the Fun Walk.

John said:

“We had a very lively and interesting session, and discussed a wide variety of issues including Afghanistan, tuition fees and the economy. It was also good to catch up with Sue Hammond and her 6th Form team.”

“It was also good to meet with Lucy Franks, one of the students visiting Auschwitz as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust initiative.  The Fun Walk subsidies this visit as I think it is very important that we do not forget the lessons of history.”

“These visits are a unique opportunity for students to see the camps themselves and reflect on the lessons to be learnt. By understanding the horrors that took place in that dark chapter of history, we can help to ensure that future generations never again allow racism or discrimination to go unchallenged.”

Lucy said:

‘I really appreciate Mr Baron’s support and encouragement in my participation in the Lessons from Auschwitz programme, involving a trip to Auschwitz. I am also grateful for his offer of support from the Fun Walk Committee.’

Notes to Editors

Lucy’s visit takes place on 7th February
