MP stresses importance of our creative industries

Today in the House of Commons the Secretary of State for Education, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, gave a Statement about the curriculum, exams and accountability reform. John Baron MP took the opportunity to continue pressing the Secretary of State about the importance of creative subjects at school – having lobbied the Education Secretary previously.

John asked,

“Given that we are a creative people, as illustrated by the strength of our creative industries, can I have an assurance that in future the Secretary of State will not marginalise creative subjects at school?”

The Secretary of State said in response that he had appreciated John’s courteous lobbying on this issue, and he would be prepared to give that assurance.

Afterwards, John said,

“Whilst recognising the importance of the core subjects such as English, Maths and Science, our education system should be broad enough to offer choice when it comes to the creative subjects. Otherwise, our creativity will suffer, as will our economy.”
