MP supports ability of local authorities to limit planning free for all
Yesterday in the House of Commons, John Baron MP voted against his Government and for an amendment to the Growth and Infrastructure Bill tabled by Lord True and passed by Members of the House of Lords. The Government has introduced proposals to increase the extent of ‘permitted development’ – the amount individuals can alter their properties before having to formally apply for planning permission – up to eight metres in length [double the present limit]. Whilst the Government’s intention was that this should apply nationwide, the amendment allowed for the local planning authority to decide whether to sign up to the proposals.
The Government won the vote 285 to 257, but recognising the strength of feeling against its plans, undertook to redraft this area of the Bill prior to its next appearance in the Commons.
John said afterwards,
“The Government’s proposals are a recipe for disputes and complaints, as people object to large-scale developments by their neighbours. The amendment is a reasonable compromise, ensuring local authorities are able to respond to local priorities.”
“I am glad the Government has recognised it needs to come back with some concessions, and I hope they will contain sufficient improvements.”
