MP continues calls for 2017 EU referendum legislation in this Parliament
John Baron MP today tabled an amendment to the Queen’s Speech, expressing regret that an EU Referendum Bill was not included in Wednesday’s address. In April, John delivered a letter to the Prime Minister co-signed by over 100 Conservative back benchers calling for legislation in this Parliament for an EU referendum in the next.
John said,
“This amendment continues our campaign first initiated in the summer of last year, when 100 Conservative colleagues joined me in urging the Prime Minister to commit to legislation in this Parliament for an EU referendum in the next. This would help to address the public mistrust when people hear politicians making promises on Europe. Legislation now would prove the Conservatives are serious.”
“The Prime Minister raised expectations last week, but an EU Bill was not included in the Queen’s Speech. Our message is that if the Government can not introduce legislation, then it should at least support legislation if we manage to get it to the House of Commons.”
