MP questions control over weapons

Today in the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon William Hague MP, gave a Statement on the situation in Syria. Although there is currently an arms embargo on sending weapons from EU countries to Syria, there are signs countries including Britain and France are considering whether the embargo should be altered to allow the supply of arms to anti-Government forces.

In the House of Commons, John said,

“No option is without risk. However, given the West’s poor track record in the region of arming groups and individuals such as the Mujahideen and Saddam Hussein, and that some rebels have chosen to align with al-Qaeda, can the Foreign Secretary answer how he would ensure weapons supplied to rebels did not fall into the wrong hands?”

The Foreign Secretary did not answer the question, but said that no decision had yet been taken.

Afterwards, John said,

“When it comes to a civil war, there are no easy answers. We should continue our diplomatic and humanitarian efforts, but we must learn from our past mistakes and not arm the rebels.”
