MP again questions Government’s Reservist policy

Today the Government announced further Army redundancies. John Baron MP has highlighted weaknesses in Government plans to replace 20,000 regular troops with 30,000 reservists.

John said,

“The Government’s plan is based upon false assumptions, false logic and false economies. To go ahead with 20,000 redundancies before knowing whether the reservist plan works is foolhardy.”

“The present TA mobilisation rate of 40% suggests 50,000 reservists will be needed. Meanwhile, financial incentives resulting in ex-regular reservists being on a better pay scale than a serving Brigadier and the fact reservists are more expensive to train all point to false economies.”

“And this is before we even consider the loss of expertise as regulars walk out of the door. This error is compounded by the axing of well-recruited battalions like 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and the additional funding required to keep under-strength battalions up to the mark.”
