MP writes to local schools to encourage participation and offers financial help from the Fun Walk Trust

John Baron MP has today written to local schools regarding the government’s National Citizen Service programme. NCS is a government funded scheme for 15-17 year olds, which sees young people make the most of their summer holidays and half terms by doing action-packed and skills-building courses. Teams then plan, fund and complete a project which benefits their community.

NCS is accessible to all, regardless of income, ability, educational attainment or ambition. With government backing, costs are capped at £50, and bursaries are available. Furthermore, The Fun Walk Trustees [of which John is Chairman] would be willing to further subsidise a limited number of students who would not otherwise be able to attend the course for financial reasons. Please phone 07544 324218 if this is the case.

John said:

“NCS is a worthwhile new scheme which could benefit both youngsters taking part and the local communities hosting the project. I encourage young people to sign up at www.ncseast.co.uk and take this opportunity to learn new skills. Costs are capped at £50 and further help through bursaries and the Fun Walk Trust is available.”

“NCS can fit seamlessly with every charitable and community project happening in our region this summer, so if you know of a project that could benefit from these teenagers’ help then let us know.”

James Reed, Chairman of Reed Group and Managing Director of Reed in Partnership, said:

“Whether you are a young person dreaming of a career in finance, construction or anywhere in-between, having NCS written on your CV will be invaluable in the future.”

Jack Chandler, 16, from Pitsea, took part in NCS during his Easter holidays. His team went on expedition to the Lake District to go hiking, camping and learning bush-craft. For their social action project, Jack’s team raised over £900 for St Helena Hospice by staging a ‘jailbreak’ from Chelmsford prison.

Jack said:

“I would recommended NCS to everyone; you don’t get to do stuff like this very often, and I’ve made loads of new friends. I’ve also used all of the skills I’ve learnt to put on my CV so I’ve recently got a job as a sales assistant.”

About National Citizen Service:

National Citizen Service is a flagship government initiative. It offers a unique opportunity for 15, 16 and 17 year olds to develop new skills, make new friends and engage with their community. The programme is split into three phases: 1/ an outdoor away-from-home residential, including team building activities, rock climbing and trekking; 2/ a community-based residential, working with local businesses and other organisations to learn new skills such as music, drama or sport and discover more about their local areas; 3/ the opportunity to create and deliver their own community projects, such as fundraising for homelessness or caring for the local environment. The completion of NCS is marked with a celebration of young people’s achievements and all participants will receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.

The programme is open to all young people who are 16 or 17 by 31st August 2013, meaning that technically a 15 year old could take part.
