MP says Iran should be included in any peace talks
John Baron MP today pressed the Foreign Secretary [The Rt. Hon. William Hague MP] during questions in the House of Commons about Britain’s role in Syria now that Brittain had ruled out military intervention.
John said:
“In welcoming the Prime Ministers assertion that we will not intervene militarily in Syria, I urge the Government to go the extra diplomatic mile. It is precisely because Iran disagrees with us and that they are participants in this civil war, that they should be attending any forthcoming peace talks. Will the Government push this agenda at the G20?”
The Foreign Secretary said in response that Iran had been extremely difficult to deal with and indeed was supporting the Assad regime. This made negotiations problematic.
John said afterwards:
“There can only be a political solution to the crisis in Syria. The UK can still play a very constructive role in trying to get all participants round the negotiating table. The Syrian people will continue to suffer if we fail in this objective.”
