MP says extension of the CDF will make a real difference to cancer patients
As Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, John has campaigned in Parliament for clarity from Government regarding the end-2013 closure deadline – believing it should be extended or replaced with something similar. On Saturday the Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, announced that the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF) will be extended until 2016. The CDF was established after the 2010 election, and enables English cancer patients to access drugs not otherwise available on the NHS.
John said,
“This is extremely good news for cancer patients, their families and clinicians. The CDF has been a great success, and has helped over 30,000 patients access cutting-edge drugs which would otherwise have been unavailable. In many cases, this has made all the difference.”
“The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, together with many other cancer charities, campaigned hard for clarity about the future of the CDF after 2013. I am glad the Government has listened and has made the right decision.”
