MP says CQC must be politically independent
Following media reports at the beginning of October that an adverse Care Quality Commission report on Basildon Hospital failings in 2009 was suppressed by the then Labour Government for political reasons, ahead of the 2010 General Election, John wrote to the Department of Health seeking assurances that this would not happen again in future. John has now received a response which details changes to strengthen the operational independence of the CQC. These measures include proposals to remove powers that Ministers have to intervene in the CQC’s operational decisions and plans for the CQC to be able to set its own programme of work.
John said:
“The Minister’s response made clear the CQC will be politically independent in future. The Changes are positive and will ensure the CQC is not subject to undue political pressure from Government as was thought to be the case in 2009.”
“But there are still questions to be answered about this episode. The facts must be put on the table. Lessons must be learnt for the benefit of patients.”
“This is a legacy issue and I have full confidence in the current management of Basildon Hospital.”
