MP says Britain should act in concert with other countries
The civil war in Syria is worsening, and the UNHCR Syrian programme estimate 2.3m refugees have so far fled the fighting. The majority are seeking sanctuary in neighbouring countries, and are being accommodated in refugee camps, many of which are vastly overfilled and which are lacking in amenities such as food, water and basic healthcare.
John said,
“As a permanent member of the UN, we have both rights and responsibilities. Given the scale of this humanitarian crisis, and in collaboration with other countries, we should be taking in at least women and children whilst this civil war rages.”
“The UK has been very generous in the aid it has donated. It is now time for our EU neighbours in particular to step up to the plate and also offer refuge to these vulnerable people. Action, not words, is now needed.”
