MP highlights need to work with the United Nations
Today John Baron MP has welcomed the Government’s change of heart in now agreeing to take in Syrian refugees, with a particular focus on women and children. Previous to this announcement, the Government had focused its aid on the ground close to the conflict, but had not agreed to take in refugees. John and other MPs had argued against the Government’s position.
John said,
“This is an humanitarian crisis of monumental proportions. There is a moral obligation to help, in cooperation with other countries and the United Nations, particularly as we are one of the five Permanent Members of the UN. I therefore welcome this change of heart by the Government, which has also been well received by the UN and charities here.”
“As ever, the devil will be in the detail. We need to ensure that parents and children are not separated, and that this new commitment is in addition to existing Government support for refugees.”
