MP supports Conservatives’ referendum pledge

Reacting to news that Douglas Carswell MP is standing down and seeking re-election as a UKIP candidate, John said,

“I am sad and surprised to hear of Douglas’ decision. He has made a mistake in defecting to UKIP. Only the Conservatives will be able to deliver an in/out referendum in the next Parliament – Labour and the Liberals oppose a referendum on principle, and UKIP will not be able to form the next Government.”

“I continue to believe we need a fundamental change in our relationship with the EU, in favour of trade, not politics. Greater clarity as to which powers we are hoping to repatriate, should we win the next election, would do No 10 no harm at all.”
