MP warns against pacts with UKIP
Today the House of Commons returned to the EU Referendum Bill sponsored by Bob Neil MP – the previous one being killed off in the House of Lords, after clearing the Commons, by Labour and Liberal Peers. The EU Referendum Bill is the result of John’s campaign in Parliament, culminating in an amendment to last year’s Queen’s Speech, which persuaded No 10 to support legislation in this Parliament for an in/out referendum in the next.
In the Chamber, John said,
“Given only the Conservatives are willing and able to deliver an in/out referendum, what does it say of the Labour and Liberal leaderships that they can not trust the British people on this issue of seminal importance?”
Afterwards, John said,
“The arrogance of the other main political parties is clearly evident. Whatever one’s views on the EU, it is only right that people are offered a choice, given that the nature of our relationship has fundamentally changed since we first joined. Yet the Labour and Liberal leaderships believe they know best.”
“As for UKIP, I have long maintained there should be no electoral pacts, as some are suggesting. It is a rival political party. For those people who want their say in an in/out EU referendum, only the Conservatives are capable of delivering this vote – Labour and Liberals will not, and UKIP can not.”
