MP says no rebate until EU’s accounts have been audited
Today in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister made a statement about the EU Council meeting last weekend. The EU’s £1.7bn rebate demand to the UK – due to its growing economy – was discussed.
John asked,
“Has the time not come to make it clear to the EU that the UK will not even consider any rebate until the EU’s shambolic accounts have been properly audited and signed off – otherwise, how can we have any confidence in their figures?”
The Prime Minister expressed sympathy with the view.
John said afterwards,
“The EU completely lacks credibility, given its accounts have not been signed off for nearly 20 years. No other major organisation, whether domestic or international, would be allowed to proceed on such a basis. Actions speak louder than words. We now need proper scrutiny of these accounts before any further demands or rebates are even considered.”
