MP says sudden EU bill remains unacceptable

Following today’s meeting of EU finance ministers, it was announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt Hon George Osborne MP, that the EU had agreed to halve the British surcharge from £1.7bn to £850m. Britain will not pay anything towards the surcharge this year, and will instead make two interest-free payments by September 2015.

John said,

“The fact that we do not seem to have had a coherent answer as to why we have been presented with such a large bill at such short notice worries me. These figures do not make sense.”

“As I recently put to the Prime Minister, such figures also lack credibly because they come from an organisation which has had trouble getting its accounts properly audited and signed off. This would not be allowed to happen in any other organisation funded by the taxpayer in this country.”

“However, our large contributions to the EU budget remind us of the importance of an in/out referendum, to allow the British people to have their say on whether we should remain a member of this organisation. Only the Conservatives will deliver a referendum – Labour and the Liberals will not, and UKIP can not.”
