MP highlights initiative’s positive impact on public health
In a House of Commons Adjournment debate last night, the Minister for Public Health, Jane Ellison MP, announced that the Government would put legislative proposals for standardised cigarette packaging to MPs before the General Election. If the vote is successful, this initiative could become law by 2016.
John said,
“On behalf of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, which has campaigned for standardised packaging both above and below the radar screen, I very much welcome this announcement by the Government. 100,000 people die each year from smoking-related diseases, including cancer. Standardised packaging will have a positive impact on public health, including for children – given two thirds of smokers start before they are 18.”
