Today in the House of Commons during a debate on the Alternative Vote [AV] system, John Baron MP questioned the Rt. Hon. Nick Clegg MP about the adverse consequences of introducing AV into this country.

John asked:

“The Deputy Prime Minister is right to talk about trust in politics, but one of the problems with AV is the democratic con trick it can play on voters in that voters cannot always be sure what they are going to get. For example, what would he say to Labour sympathisers who were persuaded to vote Liberal at the last general election by the slogan ‘vote Liberal and keep out the Tories’?”

The Deputy Prime Minister did not answer the question.

John said afterwards:

“There is a democratic deficit in the AV system. In contrast, voters know what they are going to get with the present First Past the Post system. I therefore cannot support the Government on this issue.”
