John Baron MP raises evidence publication during Chilcot Inquiry debate

MP presses Rt Hon Jack Straw MP over Iraq

During today’s debate in the House of Commons regarding the delay in publishing the Chilcot report, John Baron MP raised the question as to why evidence cleared for publication has not been released since 2012, and also pressed Jack Straw [Foreign Secretary at the time of the Iraq War] as to whether he would now finally admit the Government went to war on a false premise.

During the debate, John said,

“We are aware that there has been a lot of evidence cleared for publication, but which has not been published since 2012. It would be good to know the reason as to why we can not now see this evidence as, in the absence of the report itself, it would be the next best thing.”

In responding, the Rt Hon David Davis MP, who introduced the debate, agreed.

John also asked Rt Hon Jack Straw MP as to whether he would now admit to having gone to war on a false premise.

John asked,

“Will he now do something that both his party and large sections of my own party has failed to do, and that is admit that we went to war on a false premise – there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction?”

Rt Hon Jack Straw MP said that he would not.
